Who is this course for?
If you are an adult looking to further develop your painting skills & uncover your inner artist in a supportive and inclusive environment, then this course is for you. You may have already studied a Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design with us or you may have other personal or professional art experience - we welcome all applications.
Level 4 takes you a stage further towards seeing yourself as an emerging artist rather than an art student. Alongside guided sessions that explore technique, this journey is about self-discovery within creative practice and realising a distinctive style and a set of methods that work well for you as an individual.

When and where is it held?
Study one day per week, Wednesdays, in our art studio environment from 10 - 4pm. Start date for 2024 is Wednesday 4th September and there are 32 sessions in total.
There are breaks in line with the Norfolk County Council school term calendar.
We are based in Sprowston, Norwich, Norfolk NR7 8SQ.

What art skills will I learn?
The course is split into 3 modules/terms: Painting & Drawing at Scale for Impact, People & Places and Personal Development for Exhibition Work. You will further develop your skills in oils, acrylics and watercolour.
You will understand how to use colour to create mood, convey messages, and make your paintings resonate with viewers. Learn how to infuse your works with genuine emotion, making each piece a true reflection of your inner world. Turn your passion into a profession by discovering the business side of being an artist, including how to market your work, approach galleries, and create opportunities to sell your art.

How will I be taught?
Delivery will include: guided sessions, field trips, tutorials, experimentation, supported self – study, exhibition event.
You will be invited to book regular one-to-one consultations with you tutor to support progress. The face to face feedback sessions will enable you to analyse your work made to date and you will be provided with a negotiated plan for moving forward including tips and suggestions to develop your work and skills further.
Your tutor will take the time to listen to your goals and hopes for your artwork and guidance will be tailored to support your individual development.
Art Course Content

You will focus on creating considered artwork, drawing the on the wealth of opportunities offered in the immediate surrounding of the Norfolk coast and landscape. There will be an opportunity for working out in the field, collecting sketches, photographs and absorbing the beauty of our county. Development of skills for this section will be supported by guided sessions & you will develop your own artwork based on the methods delivered & within guided experimentation. This section is particularly focussed on painting & drawing which will lead to the production of finished work. You will be encouraged to work at scale for impact.

This module focusses on development of skills in portraiture, figure drawing and the creation of artwork that includes people within the landscape. Using watercolours, acrylics, oils and drawing skills you will create finished work that links together as you move towards realising your own distinctive style.
You will work towards building confidence in the skill of portraying the human form in a variety of ways.

In this module you will be supported in the creation of your own body of work that showcases all you have learned to date & will culminate in an external exhibition event. Through one-to-one support it is expected that you will be able to create work that represents your own distinctive style. This module will aim to encourage you to develop your confidence towards an end of course exhibition. There will be information about how to present and display your work and talk to prospective buyers.
There are no essays, written evaluations or formal exams. Feedback will be given in the form of tutorials. These are an opportunity to have a face-to-face conversation with a tutor that focusses specifically on your work and progress. You will investigate in detail how you might achieve more within your work as well as celebrate what you have done well.
Although this is not an accredited course and does not attract UCAS points, successful completion of all modules will result in a The Art Academy Level 4 Diploma. You will be issued with a certificate and have created an extensive portfolio of work.

How much does this painting course cost?
£2995. The full course fee is payable in order to secure your place on the course. Materials are included for any guided sessions where your tutor is delivering a step-by-step class/project.

You will attend one day per week on Thursdays 10-4pm. If you wish to complete further study at home this is entirely up to you and not compulsory. There are 34 sessions in total.

No, we have designed this course to focus on practical skills and techniques. We will ask you to talk about the work you have created; full guidance will be given. It will be a simple reflection exercise that will help your tutor feedback on what it is you have created and what you were trying to achieve.

Some materials are included in the cost of this course - Materials are included for any guided sessions where your tutor is delivering a step-by-step class/project. You will need to source your own materials necessary for all other lessons. We have designed the lessons to use materials and equipment that are readily available or that you are more than likely to already have. We will send learners a suggested kit list, some of which can be purchased from our materials store.

Yes, full completion of each module is required to achieve the The Art Academy Level 4 Diploma in Art & Design.

You can create and store your artwork in a sketchbook or keep your individual pieces separate.

No, your artwork will be reviewed by tutors during your tutorials where you will be given feedback about your development and progression.

If you have achieved the L3 Diploma in Art and Design at The Art Academy or a L3 art qualification elsewhere, this course should be suitable for you. If you are not already on one of our programs you may need to attend an interview to gauge if the course is right for you.

This course is aimed at those who have already undertaken previous study in Art & Design at Level 3 OR those who have a similar qualification or experience.

There are no specific qualification entry requirements for this course. We will assess your application on it’s own merits and allocate places accordingly.

This course in not accredited by an awarding body and therefore does not attract UCAS points. It has been designed using our knowledge and experience of working with accredited qualifications and is aimed at those who wish to focus on developing their artistic skills and techniques in order to be able to produce higher quality artwork. You will build a strong portfolio of evidence to display your creative ability which can then be shown to Universities for consideration as a mature student on a degree level qualification.
Please note that we do not guarantee access to a degree level qualification as this depends on individual university requirements. We would recommend you contact your university of choice to enquire about this.

Level 2 and 3 provides opportunities to explore in some depth, a range of techniques and processes that will start you thinking about honing the skills needed to produce competent work. It is very much guided by the curriculum and learners work together with a common aim.
Level 4 takes you a stage further towards seeing yourself as an emerging artist rather than an art student. Whilst there are guided sessions that explore technique, this journey is more about self-discovery. Within your creative practice you can realise a distinctive style and a set of methods that work well for you as an individual.
As emerging artists you will be encouraged to take a deep dive into your own ambitions and forge a plan to meet those in the future.

This is an opportunity to have a face-to-face conversation with a tutor that focusses specifically on your work and progress. It is a chance to investigate in detail how you might achieve more within your work as well as to celebrate what you have done well. It is within these discussions that you may be able to explore in more detail the artist that you will become and to make a realistic plan on how to move forward in terms of time management, finding resources, looking at themes and artists who influence you. You will be having conversations that are tailored to you and your progress. This replaces the more formal written feedback sheets and you will be encouraged to make your own notes during the process.
